WD2002: Formatting of Selected Text Box Is Not Changed After Applying a Different Style (275990)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q275990

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 2002, when you click a paragraph style in the Styles and Formatting pane, the text box that surrounds the selected style is not moved as expected.

Part of the style is changed to the style that you click, but the selection text box is not changed, nor is the font size.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you use the Styles and Formatting pane to create or select a Character style, and you then select a Paragraph style, as in the following example:
  1. Start Word.
  2. On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click to select the Formatting check box if it is not already selected.
  3. On the Format menu, click Styles and Formatting.
  4. In the Styles and Formatting pane, click New Style.
  5. In the New Style dialog box, type Test Style in the Name box.
  6. In the Style type box, click Character.
  7. Click the arrow next to the Font Color button, click the Blue icon, and then click OK.
  8. Type This is a test in the document.
  9. Select the text that you typed.
  10. Click Test Style in the Styles and Formatting pane.

Note that the selection text box is around Test Style, and that the selected text in the document is blue.
  11. Select the text again, and then click Heading 2 (a Paragraph style) in the Styles and Formatting pane.

Note that the selection text box is still around the Test Style entry, and that the selected text in the document is blue, bold, and italic.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, save a new style as a Paragraph style type instead of using a Character style type.
