FIX: Directory Name \MSDE2000\RESOURCES Is More Than Eight Characters, Resulting in Non-ISO CD (275305)

SYMPTOMS

When the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine 8.0 was created, the contents of the folder contained a directory called RESOURCES at the root of the image. This directory name is not ISO-compliant because it is nine (9) characters in length. The result is that any software that includes this package in its raw form, and does not use the .MSMs that are embedded into an .MSI-based setup application fails ISO compliance tests. It is important to note that the package is fully functional and there are no run-time effects due to the directory structure, it is simply a compliance issue.

WORKAROUND

This can be fixed by moving the contents of the RESOURCES directory up to the root level. The contents include a single file called setup.rll, which is the bootstrap that SQL Server Setup uses to call the Windows Installer in non-MSI-based applications.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 2000.

This problem was corrected in a later release of Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Desktop Engine Edition, which is available as a "Refresh CD" created to fix this specific problem. The Refresh CD is a full copy of Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Desktop Engine Edition.
