ACC2002: You Are Prompted for Oracle Password Even If You Select "Save Password" (275111)

SYMPTOMS

On a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, when you use the Oracle 7.3 ODBC driver, you are prompted for an Oracle password to access an Oracle linked table even after you have click to select the Save Password check box in the List Tables dialog box.

RESOLUTION

On a Windows 2000-based computer, you must supply the password each time that you access your Oracle linked table even if you have clicked to select the Save Password check box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Access 2002.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Install Windows 2000.
  2. Install Access 2002.
  3. Install the Oracle 7.3 client.
  4. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Data Sources (ODBC).
  5. Create a System DSN that uses the Oracle ODBC driver. Specify a server name of ORACLE734. Provide a valid user name and password.
  6. In Access 2002, link any Oracle table on the Oracle server by using the DSN that you created in the previous step.
  7. In the Link Tables dialog box (where the list of tables that you can link to is provided), click to select the Save Password check box.
  8. Double-click the Oracle linked table. In Datasheet view, you should be able to see the table data and you should not be prompted for a password.
  9. Quit Access.
  10. Start Access, and then open the database that contains the linked Oracle table.
  11. Double-click the Oracle linked table. Note that you are prompted for a password.
