WD2002: Symbol in Some Dialog Boxes Appears Different from the Symbol That You Inserted (273997)

SYMPTOMS

When you use a symbol in a dialog box, Word may not display the symbol character correctly in the dialog box. For example, this problem may occur in either of the following situations:
  • When you copy and paste a symbol into a dialog box.

    -or-
  • When you select a symbol in your text and access a dialog box.
This problem may occur with the following dialog boxes in Microsoft Word.

Dialog box Location
Find On the Edit menu, click Find.
Replace On the Edit menu, click Replace.
Envelopes On the Tools menu, point to Letters and Mailings, and then click Envelopes and Labels. Click to select the Envelopes tab.

CAUSE

This is a display-only problem. Word relies on the underlying character code for the symbol when it uses the symbol character, not on the way the symbol is displayed in the dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
