SYMPTOMS

After you add a word to the AutoCorrect Exceptions list, the word may still be automatically corrected when you type it.

This problem occurs when both of the following conditions are true:
  • You add a word to the Don't correct list on the Other Corrections tab (on the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, and then click Exceptions on the AutoCorrect tab).

    -and-
  • The word you added to the Don't correct list is contained in the AutoCorrect list (on the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, and then click the AutoCorrect tab).

CAUSE

The entries in the Don't correct list apply only to words that are corrected by the spelling dictionary that is in use in Microsoft Word. Words contained in the AutoCorrect list are always corrected when the Replace text as you type check box is selected (on the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, and then select the AutoCorrect tab).

WORKAROUND

To prevent this problem from occurring, do one of the following:
  • If the word is contained in the AutoCorrect list, do not add it to the Don't correct list. Instead, remove the word from the AutoCorrect list. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
    2. On the AutoCorrect tab, select the word in the AutoCorrect list, and then click Delete.
    -or-
  • To prevent Word from automatically correcting a specific word that is contained in the dictionary in use, turn on the Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker option. Then add the word that you do not want corrected to the Don't correct list. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
    2. On the AutoCorrect tab, click to select the Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker check box.
    3. Click Exceptions.
    4. On the Other Corrections tab, type the word that you do not want Word to correct in the Don't correct box, and then click Add.
    5. Click OK to close the AutoCorrect Exceptions dialog box.
    6. Click OK to close the AutoCorrect dialog box.
    -or-
  • To prevent Word from automatically correcting any word that is contained in the dictionary in use, turn off the Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker option. To do this, click AutoCorrect Options on the Tools menu. On the AutoCorrect tab, click to clear the Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker check box.
