This article was previously published under Q273815

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Money 2001 under Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP, the program only works for you, the user that installed it.

NOTE: When pre-installed on computers with Windows XP, Money 2001 may exhibit certain unintended installation or multiuser access issues. To correct this problem, simply reinstall Money 2001 from the recovery media. This problem does not affect any OEMs that will soon have Money 2002 pre-installed, and does not affect consumers who purchase Money 2001 at retail, and install it under Windows XP.

CAUSE

Microsoft Money 2001 does not meet the Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP Logo Certification requirements.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the RunAs Service

Use the RunAs service to start Money 2001 with administrator privileges.

For information about how to use the RunAs service, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type runas command, in shortcuts, and then click Display.

NOTE: To use the RunAs service, you must know the user name and password of an account that has administrator privileges.

Method 2: Install Microsoft Money for Each User

Temporarily promote each user to administrator status and install Money 2001 for each. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Log on as the Administrator account.
  2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
  3. In the left pane of the Computer Management window, under System Tools, double-click Local Users and Groups, and then click Groups.
  4. In the right pane, double-click Administrators.
  5. Click Add, and add any users or groups who need Money 2001. To do this, either type their user names, or select them from the list of available users or groups.
  6. Log off from the current account, and log on as one of the users that you added in step 5.
  7. Insert the Money CD into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and install Microsoft Money 2001.

NOTE: Each user on the computer must use the same installation choice and location.
  8. Restart the computer if you are prompted to do so, and log on as the same user.
  9. Start Money 2001.
  10. Read and accept the License Agreement to confirm the installation.
  11. Repeat steps 6-10 for any other users that you added to the Administrator group.
  12. After you complete the installations, log on as the Administrator account.
  13. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
  14. In the left pane of the Computer Management window, under System Tools, double-click Local Users and Groups, and then click Groups.
  15. In the right pane, double-click Administrators.
  16. Use the Remove button to remove the users that you promoted to Administrators.
NOTE: Because Microsoft Money 2001 is not a Windows 2000-Certified or Windows XP-Certified product, it is not intended to run for multiple users who do not have Administrator status. For this reason, some functions of Money 2001 may not work properly, depending on the security settings of your computer.
