Cannot Increase the Screen Resolution to Greater Than 256 Colors in Terminal Services (273725)

SYMPTOMS

When you start a Windows 2000 Terminal Services session, you may receive the following error message:
Please switch to the color depth of more than 256 colors and try again.
However, you are unable to change the resolution from 256 colors.

CAUSE

The error message is displayed when you start a program that requires a color palette of more than 256 colors. However, Windows 2000 Terminal Services is limited to 256 colors.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
