PPT2001: PowerPoint Stops Responding When You Create a Movie (273706)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q273706

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to create a Microsoft PowerPoint Movie with PowerPoint 2001 for Mac, PowerPoint may stop responding (hang). Additionally, the PowerPoint Movie file that you create may be unreadable.

This behavior occurs whether you create the movie by saving a presentation in PowerPoint Movie format or by using the Make Movie command on the File menu.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions are true:
  • You have more than one slide in the presentation.
  • You have two custom animated objects on a page.
  • There is an empty placeholder or non-displaying object between the animated objects.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps to animate empty placeholders and non-displaying objects:
  1. In PowerPoint, open the existing presentation from which the PowerPoint Movie was made.
  2. On the Slide Show menu, click View Show, and then note which slides have animated objects.
  3. On each slide with animated objects, on the Slide Show menu, click Animation, and then click Custom.
  4. Check each object in the Select to animate list to see if it meets the following criteria:

    • The object is not animated.
    • The object above and below are animated.
    • The object is not visible in the slide during a slide show.
For each object that meets all three criteria, click the object's icon, and then select both.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for all slides with animated objects.
NOTE: Another workaround is to delete the empty placeholders and non-displaying objects.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
