This article was previously published under Q273684

SYMPTOMS

When you open a presentation with Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition or Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 for Mac, and then change from one slide to another, you may receive the following error message
PowerPoint cannot load the link picture from file filename
and the graphic in the presentation is replaced with a generic graphic.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the presentation contains a link to a graphic, and the link is no longer working. The link is a path to the file, which consists of the hard-disk name, folders and subfolders (if used), and the file name. There are several factors that can break the link:
  • The graphic file has been moved or renamed.
  • The graphic file is in a folder or subfolder that has been renamed.
  • The hard disk has been renamed.
  • The presentation and graphic file have been moved to another computer, but the graphic file does not have the same path as the link.
  • The presentation has been moved to another computer, and the current computer is not connected to the graphic file's shared volume on the network.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you need to either replace the broken link or replace all linked picture files with embedded pictures. To do so, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Replace Broken Links

  1. Open the file in PowerPoint.
  2. Click the generic graphic.
  3. On the Insert menu, click Picture, and then click From File.
  4. Select the graphic file that you want.
  5. Click to select the Link to File check box, and then click Insert.

Method 2: Embed the Graphic

  1. Open the file in PowerPoint.
  2. Click the generic graphic.
  3. On the Insert menu, click Picture, and then click From File.
  4. Select the graphic file that you want.
  5. Click to clear the Link to File check box, and then click Insert.
