Event ID 9149 Message Occurs When the Exchange System Attendant Does Not Start (273389)

SYMPTOMS

When you restart a Windows 2000-based server that is running an Exchange 2000 computer or an Exchange Server 2003 computer, the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant does not start, and the following events are reported in Windows 2000 Event Viewer:

Event ID: 9149
Category: General
Source: MSExchangeSA
Type: error
Description:
Microsoft Exchange System Attendant failed to start Exchange server Server_name. Error code 0x80072030

Category: General
Source: MSExchangeSA
Type: Error
Description:
Unexpected error. There is no such object on the server. Facility: Win32 ID no: 80072030 Microsoft Exchange System Attendant occurred.

Event ID: 1004
Category: General
Source: MSExchangeSA
Type: Information
Description:
Microsoft Exchange System Attendant failed to start.

When you try to start the Exchange System Attendant from a command prompt, you receive the following error message:
The Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service is starting.........
The Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service could not be started.
The service did not report an error.

All other Exchange Server services do not start.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the name of the Windows 2000-based server has been changed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the Windows 2000-based server that was used when the Exchange computer was first installed, and then restart the server. The current name of the server is displayed in the event ID 9149 message. If the Exchange System Attendant still does not start after you restart the server, reinstall the Exchange computer.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
