XADM: Possible Drive Contention Between Exchange IFS Drive and Network Mapped Drive (273151)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q273151

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to access the Exchange Information File System (IFS) drive, you are unable to because the drive letter is in use by a network mapped drive. The following event is reported in the application event log:

Event ID: 1
Source: ExWin32
Type: Error
Description: The Exchange IFS failed to map drive Drive Letter. Please free drive Drive Letter to use Exchange IFS.

Alternatively, you may not be able to use a network mapped drive because it is in use by the Exchange IFS. You may receive an error message similar to the following during startup:
An error occurred while reconnecting Drive Letter to \\Network\Share.

Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Exchange IFS drive does not dynamically map. It gets mapped statically according to a registry value.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, change the mapping of the conflicting network drive.
