XADM: Duplicate Messages Received from a Reply (273105)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q273105

SYMPTOMS

If you forward a message to a distribution list that you are a member of, and another member of the distribution list replies to your forwarded message by clicking Reply to All, you are listed on the To line as well as the distribution list. You may receive two copies of that message, instead of just one copy of that message. If you inspect the two messages, they both have the same message ID.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if a race condition occurs in the delivery logic that is intentionally introduced for performance reasons; the race condition can potentially result in duplicate deliveries. The window in which this problem can occur is quite small, so this problem occurs very rarely.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

MORE INFORMATION

In message delivery, duplicate detection generally prevents two messages with the same message ID from being delivered to the same mailbox.
