SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade your Microsoft Windows 95-based computer to a Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
GlobalAlloc Failed

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if an invalid or outdated entry is located in the Win.ini file and you have an ESS 3D 16-bit PnP integrated device electronics (IDE) sound card, model number E-15-161, installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must perform the following steps to edit the Win.ini file so that the Essdaemn.exe file does not load:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type:

    win.ini

  3. Click OK. Microsoft Windows Notepad starts.
  4. Place a semi-colon at the beginning of the following line:

    Load=C:\Windows\Essdaemn.exe
  5. On the File menu, click Save.
  6. Quit Notepad.
  7. Restart the computer.
