SUMMARY

This article describes how to use Exchange 2000 Chat Service to configure a Profanity Filter on the Chat server for specific chat communities.

MORE INFORMATION

To filter profanity, first create a list of the words that you want to filter, and then use the Profanity Filter extension to apply the list to conversations on the channel.

To confirm that the Profanity Filter extension is installed:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. Locate and click the Channels folder in the chat community where you want to connect the filter.
  3. In the Details pane, right-click the channel where you want the filter to be connected, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Extensions tab, and then verify that the Profanity Filter (Pfilter) extension is displayed.
The Extensions tab lists all of the installed extensions for the chat community in which this channel is defined. The order in which the extensions are displayed determines each extension's priority. To change the priority of the Profanity Filter extension, click Move up or Move down.

Priority determines the order in which Chat Service notifies a server extension of an event. An extension with a higher priority can prevent events from reaching Chat Service or server extensions with a lower priority. Consider a chat server running both the Profanity Filter and Transcription extensions. If the priority of the Profanity Filter extension is higher than the priority of the Transcription extension, then profanity is blocked before it reaches the Transcription extension, preventing it from becoming a part of the transcript.

If the Profanity Filter extension is not displayed:
  1. Start Exchange System Manger, and then browse to the IRCX folder for the server that hosts the chat community where you want to filter profanity. (This folder is located in the Servername\Protocols folder.)
  2. Right-click the IRCX folder, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the chat community where you want to filter chats from the list, click Properties, and then click Extensions.
  4. If the PFilter extension is not displayed in the Extensions list, click Add.
  5. In the Add Extension box, click PFilter.
  6. Stop and restart Chat Service.
To add words to the filter:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. Browse to the IRCX folder for the server that is hosting the chat community where you want to filter profanity.
  3. Right-click the IRCX folder, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the chat community, click Properties, and then click Extensions.
  5. Click PFilter in the Extension Name window, and then click Properties.
  6. Click the General tab, and then click Edit Filters.
  7. In the Select filter box, click the filter that you created using the procedure in the preceding section, and then click Add.
  8. In the Add Word section, type a word in the Word box.
  9. Type a message in the Response to user of filtered word box.

When a channel member uses the word, they receive this private message.
  10. Repeat the preceding steps to add any additional words, click OK, and then click Apply.
To apply the Profanity Filter to the children's channel:

  5. Click the General tab, click Filter messages to enable filtering, and then click the filter that you created in the preceding section.
