XADM: Message Tracking Log Removal Does Not Include Current Date (271426)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q271426

SYMPTOMS

When you set up message tracking for an Exchange 2000 server, you have the option of deleting the message tracking log files. Log files, by default, are in the %SystemRoot%\Program Files\Exchsrvr\servername.log folder. By default, Exchange 2000 removes log files older than seven days. The following event is recorded when log files are removed:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSExchangeSA
Event Category: General
Event ID: 5008
Date: 7/10/2000
Time: 5:00:00 PM
User: N/A
Computer: tbill
Description:
The message tracking log file C:\Program Files\exchsrvr\tbill.log\20000712.log was deleted. For more information, click http://search.support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1.

Note that the System Attendant does not remove log files that are seven days old on the day maintenance is run. Maintenance does not count the current date. For example, if maintenance is run on July 12th, log files dated the 4th or earlier are removed. However, log files dated the 5th or earlier should be removed.

CAUSE

The system attendant does not count the current date when it removes message tracking log files.

WORKAROUND

When you specify the amount of days to remove log files, account for one less day. For example, to set the maintenance to remove log files older than seven days, to include the current day, set it to remove files older than six days.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
