XADM: Viewing Instant Messaging Properties of User Causes Microsoft Management Console to Stop Responding (271338)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q271338

SYMPTOMS

When you try to view the Instant Messaging properties of a user on a server on which only the Active Directory Connector is installed, Microsoft Management Console (MMC) stops responding (crashes).

For example, two servers exist in an Exchange 2000 environment; one server is the global catalog server and the other is the Exchange 2000 Server computer. The Active Directory Connector is installed on the global catalog server and Instant Messaging is enabled for a user from the Exchange 2000 Server computer. If you open the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC snap-in on the global catalog server and view the Instant Messaging properties for that user, the MMC may seem to be working but then may close suddenly.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, copy the Msimadm.dll file from the Exchange 2000 Server CD to a folder on the global catalog server.

After you copy the file, you need to register the file with the Regsvr32.exe program.

After you register the Msimadm.dll file, you can view Instant Messaging properties for users from the global catalog server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Exchange 2000 Server.
