OFF2001: Visual Basic Does Not Start, and No Error Message Is Received (269900)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office, when you try to run the Visual Basic Editor, nothing happens, and you do not receive an error message explaining why the Visual Basic Editor could not be started. The first time that you try to create a new macro or to start the Visual Basic Editor, you may receive the following error message:
The Visual Basic Editor could not be opened for one of the following reasons:
There may not be enough free memory to load the libraries.

Files may have been deleted or moved from their originally installed locations.

The Visual Basic Editor has not been installed on this machine. To install it, run the Microsoft Office Installer and choose Custom Install.
However, the error message does not appear again. If you try again to create a new macro or to start the Visual Basic Editor, nothing happens. You do not receive an error message, and the Visual Basic Editor does not start.

CAUSE

The Visual Basic Editor does not start if either of the following is true:
  • The Visual Basic for Applications library file has been removed from the Office folder, located in the Microsoft Office folder. -or-

  • Visual Basic for Applications has not been installed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, install Visual Basic for Applications. To install Visual Basic for Applications, follow these steps:
  1. Run the Microsoft Office Installer.
  2. Click Custom Install.
  3. In the list of programs, click to expand Office Tools, and then click Visual Basic for Applications.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
