  • Microsoft Works Suite 2001

This article was previously published under Q269726

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Works Suite, when you use the History tab of the Works Task Launcher to open a Microsoft Works 6 Word Processor document, the document is opened in Microsoft Word, but the document is not converted. The document is unreadable and looks like computer code.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following are true:
  • You installed Works 6 as a minimum installation.
  • You created the Word Processor document with Works 6.
  • You upgraded to Works Suite 2001, and included Word 2000.
When you install Works 6 as a minimum installation, none of the file converters are installed. When you upgrade to Works Suite 2001 from Works 6, the Works Suite Setup program does not reinstall Works 6; therefore, Works Suite 2001 contains no file converters either.

The Works 6 history is retained in the Works Task Launcher after the upgrade. When you click a Works Word Processor document in the Works Task Launcher History tab, the document is automatically opened in Word, which is the default word processor application after you upgrade to Works Suite. However, the file is opened in Works Word Processor native format and not converted to the Word format.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, reinstall Works 6 as a basic (or complete) installation. To reinstall Works 6 as a basic installation, follow these steps:
  1. Install the Works 6 CD-ROM.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type drive:\setup.exe, where drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  4. Click OK.
  5. On the Welcome back screen, click Next.
  6. Click Change Installation, and then click Next.
  7. Click Basic installation, and then click Next.
  8. Follow the instruction to complete the installation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Works Suite 2001.
