Any Visio 2000 edition can open drawings created in any earlier version of Visio. By default, any Visio 2000 edition can also save drawings in a format that can be opened by any other Visio 2000 edition. Finally, Visio 2000 can save drawings in the Visio 5.0 format.

To open a drawing created in an earlier version of Visio, do one of the following:
  • On the File menu, click Open.

    -or-
  • Double-click the drawing in Windows Explorer.
To save a drawing created or opened in Visio 2000 as a Visio 5.0 file, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Save As.
  2. In the Save As Type list, click Visio 5 Drawing.
If you must frequently exchange drawings with people who are using Visio 5.0, you can set Visio 2000 to save drawings in the Visio 5.0 format by default. To set Visio 2000 to save drawings in the Visio 5.0 format by default, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Save Visio Files As list, click Visio 5.
NOTE: There are attributes specific to Visio 2000 that cannot be saved in the Visio 5.0 format.
