SYMPTOMS

After you change the Internet connection type of the Microsoft Exchange Server Connector for Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) mailboxes from either the Modem or Terminal Adapter or Router options to the Full-time/Broadband Modem option, the POP3 connector continues to check for mail according to the original schedule. If you choose the Full-time/Broadband Modem option as the Internet connection type during installation and you do not change this setting, the POP3 connector queries the POP3 server for new mail every 15 minutes, Monday through Friday.

RESOLUTION

To configure the POP3 connector to download mail in 15-minute intervals:
  1. Open the Exchange Administrator program, expand the tree on the left side until you see the Configuration container, click the Connections container, and then double-click Connector for POP3 Mailboxes in the right pane to view the properties sheet for the POP3 connector.
  2. On the General tab of the POP3 connector properties, change the connection type to Modem or Terminal Adapter.

NOTE: If there are no phone book entries, you receive the following warning message:
A valid dial-up user name is required.
After you click OK, type any username and password combination in the Dial-up Network Credentials dialog box. The settings is not used.
  3. Click Schedule, adjust the schedule to download mail from the POP3 server every 15 minutes, and then verify that all entries in the "Weekdays" section are selected.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK when you are prompted to restart the service.
  6. Double-click the POP3 Connector icon to view the properties for the POP3 connector.
  7. Change the connection type to Full-time/Broadband Modem. This dims the Schedule button. The POP3 Connector attempts to log on to the POP3 server every 15 minutes.
  8. Click OK to dismiss the POP3 connector properties, and then click OK when you are prompted to restart the service.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in SBS 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

In some cases, you may want to continue to download mail over the weekend or to configure a custom download schedule on a server with a full-time connection. To do this, use the Router connection type to modify the schedule, and leave the router trigger blank.
