XADM: Adding a Storage Group Using CDO for Exchange Management Always Sets Log Prefix to E00 (269018)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q269018

SYMPTOMS

When you create a storage group by using Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) for Exchange Management, the log file prefix of the storage group is always "E00". Because most servers already have a storage group that uses "E00" as the log file prefix, you may create storage groups that have duplicate log file names.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because CDO for Exchange Management does not verify that the log file prefix that is being used is not already in use.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, manually set the log file prefix by using Active Directory Service Interface (ADSI) to set the msExchESEParamBaseName attribute of the storage group after you create the storage group. You must do this before you create any databases in the storage group.

MORE INFORMATION

Because two storage groups cannot use the same folder for log files, multiple storage groups that share the same log file prefix do not cause any technical problems.

However, multiple storage groups that share the same log file prefix can complicate situations in which you need to identify the transaction logs that belong with a certain storage group.
