Works 6: Error Message Appears When You Drag Spreadsheet Data from Portfolio to Help Pane (268769)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to drag Microsoft Works Spreadsheet data that is stored in Works Portfolio from Works Portfolio to the Works Spreadsheet Help pane, one of the following (or similar) error messages may appear:
Microsoft Excel cannot access the file.
'res://C:\WINNT\System32\shdock.dll/dnserror.htm'. There are several possible reasons:

The file name or path does not exist.The file you're trying to open is being used by another program. close the document in the other program, and try again.The name of the workbook you're trying to save is the same as the name of another document that is read-only. Try saving the workbook with a different name.
-or-
Excel caused an invalid page fault in module Excel.Exe
Additionally, if Microsoft Excel 2000 is running, the program may stop responding and you may lose any unsaved data.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, do not attempt to drag data into a Help pane.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This behavior can occur under the following sequence of conditions:
  1. You install Excel 2000 on a computer that has Works 6.0 or Works Suite 2001 already installed.
  2. You start Works Spreadsheet.
  3. You click a Works Spreadsheet Help topic (for example, Create a list) in the Works Help pane.
  4. You type some data in the spreadsheet and drag the data into Works Portfolio.
  5. You drag the data from Works Portfolio into the Works Spreadsheet Help pane.
