The keyboard functionality is lost after you install Windows 2000 (268603)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect one of the Microsoft keyboards listed in the "Applies to" section to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port in a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, the keyboard may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the keyboard is also connected to the PS/2 port in the computer, and one or more of the following conditions is true:
  • The computer does not support USB, or it does not support USB keyboards.
  • Some of the system files for the keyboard are missing or damaged.
  • The i8042 (PS/2) keyboard port in your computer is disabled.
  • Version 1.0 of the Microsoft IntelliType Pro software is installed on the computer.
Note Version 1.0 of the IntelliType Pro software is incompatible with Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they are presented.

Determine whether the computer supports USB and USB keyboards

Contact the manufacturer of your computer to inquire if the computer supports USB and USB keyboards.

Install the latest version of the IntelliType Pro software

To install the latest version of the IntelliType Pro software, use the following methods in the order that they appear in.

Remove the IntelliType Pro software

To remove the IntelliType Pro software, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft IntelliType, and then click Change/Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to remove the IntelliType Pro software.
  5. Close all open windows on the desktop.

Use Recovery Console to reset the Windows 2000 hardware configuration

Note This procedure resets your Windows 2000 hardware configuration. If you installed any new hardware or any device driver updates since you installed Windows 2000, you must install them again after you complete this procedure.

Warning Using Recovery Console incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result from the incorrect use of Recovery Console can be solved. Use Recovery Console at your own risk.

To use Recovery Console to reset the Windows 2000 hardware configuration, follow these steps:
  1. Start your computer with the Windows 2000 boot disks, or with the Windows 2000 CD-ROM if your computer supports booting from the CD-ROM drive.
  2. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or R to repair, and then press C to start the Recovery Console.
  3. Type the number for the Windows installation that you want to repair.
  4. At the password prompt, type the Administrator password, and then press ENTER.
  5. At the command prompt, type the following lines, and then press ENTER after you type each line:

    cd \winnt\system32\config
    ren system system.old
    cd \winnt
    cd repair
    copy system c:\winnt\system32\config

  6. Shut down the computer.
  7. Connect the PS/2 connector on the keyboard to the PS/2 port in the computer, and then connect the USB connector on the keyboard to an available USB port in the computer.
  8. Start the computer, and log on as the Administrator.
If the issue continues to occur, repeat steps 1 through 8, but do not connect the keyboard to an available USB port in the computer in step 7. Contact your computer manufacturer for a BIOS or USB update.

Download and install the latest version of the IntelliType software

Download and install the latest version of the Microsoft IntelliType Pro software. To do so, visit the following Microsoft Web site: After you install the latest version of the IntelliType Pro software, reinstall any updated device drivers that you installed since you originally installed Windows 2000.
