OFF2000: Cannot Insert Graphic Image from Novell Server When Path Has Multiple Long Folder Names (268560)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to insert a graphic image into a Microsoft Excel worksheet, a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, or a Microsoft Word document, you receive the following error message:
An error occurred while importing this file: drive:\folder name\folder name\folder name\folder name\file name

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following are all true:
  • You are running Microsoft Office 2000 on Microsoft Windows 98.
  • The graphic image that you are trying to insert resides on a Novell NetWare network server.
  • The universal naming convention (UNC) path to the graphic file includes two or more folder names that are long names (more than eight characters).
  • The graphic image is in one of the following formats:

    • Windows bitmap (BMP)
    • CorelDRAW files (CDR)
    • Computer Graphics Metafiles (CGM)
    • Enhanced Metafiles (EMF)
    • Encapsulated PostScript (EPS)
    • FlashPix (FPX)
    • Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)
    • Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)
    • PC Paintbrush (PCX)
    • Portable Network Graphic (PNG)
    • Tag Image File Format (TIFF)
    • WordPerfect Graphic Filter (WPG)
An example of a UNC path that is a long name for the server name and the share name is the following:

\\myservernameistoolong\mysharenameistoolong

RESOLUTION

To resolved this problem, install the Windows 98 fix documented in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following.

Workaround 1

Move the graphic image to the workstation.

Workaround 2

Change the directory structure, so that only one of the folders has a name that is longer than eight characters.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
