SYMPTOMS

If the DisablePasswordCaching registry value is set to 1 as described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, opening a Web page as a Web folder results in an access violation in Internet Explorer (Msdaipp.dll):

229940 How to Disable Internet Explorer Password Caching

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this behavior, delete the DisablePasswordCaching registry value in the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

Then, stop the Protected Storage service by typing the following line at a command prompt:

net stop "protected storage"

Internet Explorer does not cache passwords if this service is not started in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows NT.
