Works: Works Installation Does Not Complete (268543)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Works or Microsoft Works Suite, the installation process may not complete.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you are using real mode (16-bit) drivers with your CD-ROM drive. Works uses file names longer than eight characters, and real mode drivers cannot recognize file names longer than eight characters.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, replace the real mode drivers with protected mode (32-bit) drivers.

Contact the manufacturer of your computer or CD-ROM drive to determine if protected mode drivers are available for your CD-ROM drive.

Microsoft Works file names can be up to 255 characters in length.

If your computer is using real mode drivers, entries for the device are included in the Config.sys file of the root folder. To view the Config.sys file, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK:

    notepad c:\config.sys
