SYMPTOMS

If you eject a 16-bit PC Card or ATA PC Card before placing your computer in Standby mode, the computer may stop responding (hang) when you attempt to resume it (or wake it up).

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
