WD2001: Bullets Are Converted to Question Marks or Asterisks During Data Merge to E-Mail (268426)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q268426

SYMPTOMS

When you perform a data merge to e-mail operation, some characters, such as bullets, may appear in the merged e-mail documents as question marks (?) or asterisks (*).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because when you merge data to e-mail, you have the option to send it as an attachment or as text. If the data is sent as text, it is sent as plain, unformatted text, and extended characters (such as bullets) are replaced with question marks or asterisks.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method One

Use a numbered list instead of a bulleted list.

Method Two

Send the document as an attachment instead of as text. To send the document as an attachment, follow these steps:
  1. Open your mail merge main document.
  2. Click Data Merge Manager on the Tools menu.

The Data Merge Manager dialog box appears.
  3. In the Data Merge Manager dialog box, under Merge, click Merge to E-Mail.
  4. In the Mail Recipient dialog box, click Data Merge To Outbox.

    Microsoft Entourage 2001 starts.
  5. In the Send As box, click Attachment.
  6. Click Data Merge To Outbox.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2001 Macintosh Edition.
