WMP7: Media Player Deletes File Type When Not Used for Format (268366)

SYMPTOMS

When you clear a format in Microsoft Media Player, that file format is removed completely from Windows Explorer instead of appearing with the generic Windows icon indicating no association.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, reinstall another player or establish file associations from within another player's user interface.

If you have already removed the association from Windows Media Player, follow these steps to replace the association:
  1. Open Windows Media Player, click Tools.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Click Formats.
  4. Select the file format you want to add.
  5. Change the file association in Windows Explorer by right-clicking My Computer and then clicking Explorer.
  6. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  7. Select File Types, and then click on the file association you want to change.
  8. Click Change and then choose the application you want to use to open files with that extension.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
