Non-Administrator Cannot Gain Access to Removable Media (268236)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q268236

SYMPTOMS

When a non-administrative user attempts to gain access to removable media, the user may receive an "Access denied" error message. This behavior occurs after an administrator applies the "Allowed to eject removable NTFS media" policy on the computer to allow "Administrators and Power Users" members or "Administrators and Interactive Users" members to eject and format removable media.

CAUSE

This problem occurs for the following reasons:
  • Permission was granted to "Administrators and Power Users" members to eject and format removable media. No permission was granted for "ordinary" users.
  • Permission was granted to "Administrators and Interactive Users" members and was later removed after successfully logging on. This causes the current permission to be retained on the device until the next reboot.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
