This article describes the proper way to add new licenses for Microsoft SQL Server through the licensing applet.

To add licenses for SQL Server, use the following steps:
  1. Open Control Panel and open the Licensing applet.
  2. In the Product drop-down combo box, click SQL Server.
  3. Select the licensing mode:

    • Per Server

      -or-

    • Per Seat


    NOTE: You have only one chance to change from per server to per seat.
  4. Click Add licenses and specify the number of licenses to add.

    NOTE: You can only add licenses in Per Server mode.
  5. Click OK, and then check the license agreements for the conditions.
  6. Re-start SQL Server so that the new licenses can take effect.
The new licenses that were added will not be reflected on the SQL Server server until you re-start SQL Server.
