Works 6: Unexpected Results When You Open a Word Document That Was Originally a Works Document (268216)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a Microsoft Word 2000 (.doc) document in Microsoft Works Word Processor, one or more of the following symptoms may occur:

On a computer running Windows 95 or Windows 98, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Wkswp has caused an error in MSWRD832.CNV
Wkswp will now close
On a Windows 2000-based computer the document may open, but images may be out of place and superimposed.

On a Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
Works cannot open drive:\path\file. The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you perform the following steps in the order shown:
  1. Start Works Word Processor.
  2. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click Clip Art.
  3. Select any image and then click Insert.
  4. On the Format menu, click Object.
  5. Click Tight, and then click OK.
  6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 to insert and format a second image.
  7. On the File menu, click Save.
  8. In the File name box, type wordtest, and then click Save.
  9. Quit Works Word Processor.
  10. Start Microsoft Word 2000.
  11. On the File menu, click Open.
  12. In the Files of type box, click Works 6.0.
  13. Browse to find the Wordtest.wps file, and then click Open.
  14. On the File menu, click Save As.
  15. In the Files of type box, click Word Document, and then click Save.
  16. Quit Word.
  17. Start Works Word Processor.
  18. On the File menu, click Open.
  19. In the Files of type box, click Word 97-2000 (*.doc).
  20. Browse to find the Wordtest.doc file, and then click Open.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, save the Works Word Processor document that you created in steps 1 through 9 of the "Cause" section as a Works 6.0 document in Microsoft Word.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
