SYMPTOMS

When you right-click a file in Microsoft Works Portfolio, and you then click Cut on the shortcut menu or press CTRL+X, and you then cut another file before you paste the first file, the first file is permanently deleted. This behavior is different than in Microsoft Windows Explorer, where the first file is not deleted until it has been pasted elsewhere.

When you right-click a file in Works Portfolio, and then click Copy, or press CTRL+C, a file that was previously cut may also be deleted if it has not been pasted elsewhere.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Portfolio uses the clipboard to store cut and copied files.

This is normal behavior for Windows-based programs. The Clipboard holds only the most recent addition. Data that you cut is permanently lost if it is replaced on the Clipboard before it is pasted (click Paste on the Edit menu, or press CTRL+V).

Windows Explorer does not move files to the Clipboard, but marks the file for deletion if it is pasted elsewhere.

RESOLUTION

To prevent the loss of data that you intend to cut and then paste, always paste the data before you cut or copy more data.
