Microsoft Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes Does Not Save Settings (267846)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add or modify the properties for a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) account of the connector for POP3 mailboxes, settings may not be saved and the following Event Viewer messages may be logged:
Event ID: 7024
Source: Service Control Manager
Description: The Microsoft Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes service terminated with service-specific error 2332296290.

Event ID: 9026
Source: POP3 Connector
Description: Failed to initialize the session object. The error is 0x8b040462.

CAUSE

This issue can occur when one or more damaged files are in the Program Files\POP3 Connector\Directory folder.

RESOLUTION

IMPORTANT: This procedure deletes all existing POP3 server entries. Make a note of all account names and POP3 server names, and verify that you have the password information for all of the accounts before you follow this procedure.

Before you add or modify the properties for a POP3 account of the connector for POP3 mailboxes:
  1. Stop the Microsoft Exchange Server Connector for POP3 Mailboxes service by using the Services tool in Control Panel.
  2. Open Microsoft Windows NT Explorer, and then locate and delete the files in the following folder:

    Program Files\POP3 Connector\Directory

    Note that some files may not be deleted if they are in use. Be sure to stop all Microsoft Exchange Server services, the Microsoft Fax service, the Modem Sharing service, and any anti virus or backup software.
  3. Restart the Exchange Server Connector for POP3 Mailboxes service by using the Services tool in Control Panel.
  4. Open the Exchange Administrator program, and then choose the properties of the connector for POP3 mailboxes to re-enter the information for each POP3 account as needed.

MORE INFORMATION

The POP3 files may be damaged. This can be caused by hardware failure, access by a file-level anti virus scanner during a write procedure, a power failure during operation, or many other factors. It is recommended that you exclude the Program Files\POP3 Connector\Directory folder from any anti virus scans.
