SYMPTOMS

When you are using a Microsoft Windows Millennium-based computer with RarSoft WinRAR 2.70 or 2.71 and you try to create a new archive by right-clicking and then clicking New, WinRAR may not open, and you may receive the following error message:
C:\windows\desktop\New Winrar archive.rar. The archive either is unknown format or damaged

CAUSE

This behavior can occur due to an incompatibility between RarSoft WinRAR versions 2.70 and 2.71 and Microsoft Windows Millennium.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, upgrade to a later version of RarSoft WinRAR.

STATUS

This problem occurs when you use Microsoft Windows Millennium and RarSoft WinRAR version 2.70 or 2.71.
