Browsing Web Folders Through My Network Places Takes You to My Computer, Not Back to My Network Places (267681)

SYMPTOMS

When you create a Web folder as a New Network Place in My Network Places, open the new Web folder, and then click the arrow to return to My Network Places, you move to Web Folders, a hidden folder, instead of returning to My Network Places. When you click the arrow again to move from Web Folders, you move to My Computer instead of to My Network Places.

This may only happen after first browsing to a subdirectory of the Web folder.

If you are using an upgrade from Windows 98 SE to Windows Millennium Edition, this behavior occurs on any Web folder migrated from Windows 98 SE, without browsing to a subfolder.

NOTE When Folder options is set to open all in same folder, and you are working with several Web folders, you must close My Computer, and then continually re-open My Network Places to access different Web folders.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because of a change in browsing functionality; the operating system loops back into the hidden Web Folder namespace.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. On the desktop in the Windows Millennium Edition, double-click My Network Places.
  2. Create a Web folder as New Network Place: http://<webfolder/home>.
  3. Double-click home on webfolder.
  4. In the folder that opens, double-click FullAccess.
  5. Click the up-arrow, and then click it again. You are in the Web Folders folder, a hidden folder namespace.
  6. Click the up-arrow. This takes you to My Computer.
