Edit Button Starts Notepad as the HTML Editor in Internet Explorer (266954)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Internet Explorer on a computer running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and add the Edit button to the Internet Explorer toolbar, when you click the Edit button, Notepad may start as the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) editor.

In addition, no HTML editor is listed on the Programs tab in Internet Options on the Tools menu.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because you have not yet configured an HTML editor for Internet Explorer.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Programs tab, click the HTML editor you want to use, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
