XL2000: Every Cell Is Printed on a Separate Page When You Change the Active Printer (266114)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2000

This article was previously published under Q266114

SYMPTOMS

When you change the active printer and you then attempt to print a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, each cell may be printed as a separate page.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when a printer driver reports to Excel that it will scale the spreadsheet before printing it, and the printer does not have scaling capability.

When you have a printer installed that has built-in scaling capability, Excel does not scale the documents before they are printed. When the printer with the installed built-in scaling capability (for example, a PostScript printer) is replaced by a printer without built-in scaling capability (for example, a Printer Control Language [PCL] printer), the scaling bit that tells Excel not to scale the document may remain turned on.

This behavior is very rare and occurs most often when the PostScript version of a printer is replaced with a PCL version of the same printer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove all printer drivers, and then install only the printer driver that you want.

To remove a printer driver, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click the printer that you want to remove.
  3. On the shortcut menu, click Delete.
  4. When confirmation message appears, click Yes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
