Error Message: WUAUCLT Has Caused an Error in <Unknown> (266065)

SYMPTOMS

The first time that the Automatic Updates feature runs on your Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
WUAUCLT has caused an error in unknown
WUAUCLT will now close

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you have Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) installed in Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition and you then upgrade the computer to Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue:
  1. Uninstall ICS:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    2. On the Windows Setup tab, click Communications, and then click Details.
    3. Click to clear the Internet Connection Sharing check box, click OK, and then click OK.
    4. Restart your computer when you are prompted.
  2. Connect to the Internet directly (without using ICS), and then accept the Automatic Updates End User License Agreement.
  3. Reinstall ICS:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    2. On the Windows Setup tab, click Communications, and then click Details.
    3. Click to select the Internet Connection Sharing check box, click OK, and then click OK.
    4. Follow the instructions in the Home Networking Wizard.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
