Internet Connection Sharing Host Does Not AutoDial on an IP over 1394 Network (266036)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q266036

SYMPTOMS

If you are running Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on an IP over 1394 network, the ICS server may not always automatically dial the connection when the request comes from the client.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the IP address of the Web server is already in the DNS cache of the ICS Server.

WORKAROUND

There are two ways to work around this issue. You can either restart the ICS server to reset the DNS cache. Or, you can request a new Web page (one that was not recently visited). This causes the server to use autodial because a DNS query is generated that the ICS server cannot resolve without dialing the Internet.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The ICS server will not use autodial on subsequent requests for the same Web page because the IP address of the Web server is already in the DNS cache. Once this has happened, rather than dialing to resolve the client's DNS request, the ICS server will send a DNS response to the client with the IP address of the Web server that was queried. The client will then send a request to the ICS server by IP address, which fails to trigger autodial.
