PRJ2000: Error Message: The Feature You Are Trying to Use Is on a CD-ROM Or Other Removable Disk That Is Not Available (265886)

SYMPTOMS

When you are installing Microsoft Project, you may receive the following error message:
Windows Installer
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Project 2000' disk and click OK.
You receive this error message even when your Microsoft Project 2000 installation CD is currently in the CD-ROM drive.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are both true:
  • You install the retail version of Microsoft Project 2000.

    -and-
  • You did not uninstall a beta version of Microsoft Project 2000 that was previously installed on the same computer.
In addition, on computers that run Microsoft Windows 2000, the following conditions are also required:
  • The beta version of Microsoft Project 2000 was installed when the computer was running an earlier version of Microsoft Windows, such as Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 98.
  • You upgraded the computer's operating system to Microsoft Windows 2000 before you tried to install the retail version of Microsoft Project 2000.
During the first phase of Setup on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 95, or Microsoft Windows 98, the retail version of Microsoft Project 2000 upgrades the Windows Installer to a later version than the version that was included with the beta version of Microsoft Project. The upgraded version of Windows Installer cannot remove the beta version of Microsoft Project, and Setup is unable to continue.

Microsoft Windows 2000 includes the later version of the Windows Installer that Microsoft Project 2000 includes. If the beta version of Microsoft Project was installed before you upgraded to Microsoft Windows 2000, the same behavior occurs.

In addition, after Windows Installer has been upgraded to the later version, if you attempt to remove the beta version of Microsoft Project by using the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel, the Windows Installer generates the same error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

WORKAROUND

To resolve this behavior, remove the beta version of Microsoft Project, and then run Setup again for the retail version. To do this, use one of the following methods as appropriate for your situation.

Method 1: If You Have the Installation CD for the Beta Version

If you have the installation CD for the beta version that is currently installed on your computer, run Setup again from the beta CD, and select the Remove All option. Then you can run Setup for the retail version of Microsoft Project.

Method 2: If You Do Not Have the Beta Installation CD

If you do not have the installation CD for the beta version that is installed, you must manually remove part of the beta version, so that the retail version of Project can be installed correctly. To do this, follow these steps:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
  3. In the Registry Editor, delete the following registry settings.Registry Settings in Windows NT 4.0:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\8061EFD2ACDB1D117BEA000CF49BF2D3

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{2DFE160-BDCA-11D1-D7AE-00C04FB92F3D}

    Registry Settings in Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 2000:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Features\8061EFD2ACDB1D117BEA000CF49BF2D3

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\8061EFD2ACDB1D117BEA000CF49BF2D3

  4. Rename or delete all copies of the Microsoft Project global template. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
    2. In the Find: All Files dialog box, for Named, type Global.mpt.
    3. In the Look in box, select Local hard drives.
    4. Make sure that the Include subfolders check box is selected, and then click Find Now.
    5. For each instance of the Global.mpt file that is found, click to select the file. On the File menu, click either Delete or Rename, depending on whether you want to keep that instance of Global.mpt.
    6. After you rename or delete all copies of the Global.mpt file, on the File menu, click Close.
  5. Delete the Winproj.exe file, which is located in the Microsoft Project 2000 installation folder. The default installation folder is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office, but this location may be different if you installed Microsoft Project 2000 to a non-default folder.
  6. Install Microsoft Project 2000.

    NOTES:

    After you restart your computer and complete the installation, do not start Microsoft Project 2000 before you proceed to step 7.

    Do not omit steps 7 and 8. Omitting these steps may cause out-of-memory errors or other problems when you open and close Microsoft Project.
  7. Uninstall Microsoft Project 2000.
  8. Reinstall Microsoft Project 2000.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
