The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q265816

SYMPTOMS

When you install Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) from a network share, the registry value that stores this location is not updated to reflect the proper installation path. Because of this incorrect path information, the computer may not reboot after you finish installing Windows 2000 SP1.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because when you install Windows 2000 SP1 from a folder on a network share, the Update.exe program modifies the ServicepackSourcePath value in the following registry key with the path set to one folder level above the actual installation path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, note that the network share installation files for Windows 2000 SP1 must be located in a folder named "I386". When you run the Update.exe program, the network share path must be set to one or more levels above the I386 folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
