This article describes how to type a telephone number for an Outlook contact so that Outlook ignores your dialing properties and dials the telephone number exactly as you type it. This is useful if you want any area code rules ignored for one particular telephone number.

To have Outlook dial a number exactly as you type it, place quotation marks ("") around the number in the telephone number box for the contact.
  1. Start Outlook.
  2. Open your Contacts folder.
  3. Double-click a contact to open the contact information.
  4. In the appropriate telephone number box (Business, Home, Business Fax, Mobile), type the telephone or fax number exactly as you want it dialed but surrounded with quotation marks, and then click Save and Close.

    For example, if you want Outlook to dial 1 (904) 555-1212, type the number as "19045551212"

    if you want Outlook to dial (904) 555-1212, type the number as "9045551212"

    -or-

    if you want Outlook to dial 555-1212, type the number as "5551212".
