NetGroupEnum() Generates Internal Error (265170)

SYMPTOMS

When you are using a program that uses the NetGroupEnum function to enumerate all user groups in a user accounts database, the call may not succeed and may generate error code 2140, which indicates that an internal error has occurred.

CAUSE

There is a problem with the way in which the function tries to expand its memory buffer when you try to enumerate groups with very large group comment fields. This causes the function to return "Internal Error" rather than the error code that it should return, which is "Error More Data."

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
