SYMPTOMS

If the USB keyboard is not present during the original Plug and Play detection process, when a computer boots into mini-Setup after Sysprep is used, the USB keyboard is not correctly set up and the extended keys on the keyboard do not function correctly.

CAUSE

When a user plugs in a USB keyboard with shortcut buttons the first time, a service (Hidserv.exe) needs to be started. This is started by Hidserv.inf, which currently starts the service by using the Runonce key. This requires the user to reset the computer for the shortcut buttons to become functional.
