SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a Web in Microsoft FrontPage, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Web server conflict on port 80.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Services, and then stop the IIS Admin Service.
  2. In Windows Explorer, rename the c:\frontpage webs\server folder as c:\frontpage webs\oldserver. Do not delete or rename the Content directory.
  3. In Windows Explorer, rename vhttpd32.exe on all local drives as vhttpd32.old, and then verify that any shortcut has been deleted from the StartUp folder.
  4. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Run dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  5. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Shared Tools/Web Server Extensions

  6. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
  7. In the Save in list, select the folder in which to save the backup copy.
  8. In the File name box, type a name for your backup file, such as Options or Backup.
  9. Under Export Range, click Selected branch.
  10. Click Save.

    The file is saved with a .reg extension.
  11. Delete the server extension key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Shared Tools/Web Server Extensions) that you just exported.
  12. Close the registry after the key has been successfully deleted.
  13. Completely reinstall the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions. Select Install Now when prompted, and then restart the computer.
  14. Configure the FrontPage Server Extensions, and then verify that the Web server is running in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  15. Open the FrontPage Web.
