SYMPTOMS

When you start the Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard, no scanners may be listed.

CAUSE

Only non-Plug and Play devices (such as serial devices) are listed. Only serial cameras are displayed in the default list.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Plug and Play devices are not listed in the Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard. A device that adheres to Plug and Play standard must first be detected by Plug and Play to be installed properly. Plug and Play detects the device, queries the device for the device Plug and Play ID, and then installs the driver that corresponds to that Plug and Play ID. This is the only way for a Plug and Play device to be properly installed. If you attempt to manually select the .inf file that contains the device driver without Plug and Play initially detecting the device and creating a Plug and Play device event, the device may not work properly.

There are approximately 50 scanner drivers from six manufacturers included with Windows Millennium Edition (Me). For additional information about the Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
