NTFS Permissions Are Needed on the Root of a Drive for ASFROOT (264563)

SUMMARY

When you place the <home> directory or a virtual directory for the Windows Media Unicast Service on an NTFS drive, the NetShow Services user account must have read permissions on the root of the drive, in addition to any ASF files that you plan on streaming. If the permissions are incorrect, you may receive error c00d0017 in Windows Media Player.

To determine the drives where you need to set permissions, perform the following steps:
  1. In the Windows Media Administrator, select Unicast Publishing Points.
  2. In the On-Demand Unicast Publishing Points list, you will see the <home> directory and any other virtual directories that have been created.
  3. Take note of the drives referenced by these Publishing Points.

At this point, you need to grant NTFS Read permissions for the NetShow Services account on each of these drives. You do not need to propagate permissions down the drive to the subdirectories or for any of the files at the root of the drive. You do, however, need to make sure that you grant NTFS Read permissions for the NetShow Services account for the actual ASF files that you plan on streaming.

For example, if you have three hard drives, C:, D:, and E:, you may have your <home> directory set to C:\asfroot and a virtual directory named customer1 set to E:\customers\customer1. You need to give the NetShow Services account Read permissions to the root of the C: and E: drives, and to the ASF files contained in these directories.
