Environment Variables Error When Starting MSConfig (264380)

SYMPTOMS

When you are starting the MSconfig.exe file after upgrading from Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) to Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may receive the following error message:
It is not possible to take the synchronization of the environment variables in the registry from the legacy files (Config.sys, Autoexec.bat).
This behavior can occur on some NEC computers.

CAUSE

The Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files on some NEC computers contain entries that cannot be properly imported to the environment variables portion of the registry.

WORKAROUND

To correct the behavior with the Config.sys file, do the following:
  • Click OK on the error message.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The issue is the pre-existing, pre-installed Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files on the NEC computer. They are loaded with IF conditional statements and CALL statements. It is not possible to determine what the correct environment settings are in the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files in a system like this.

The status returned in this case indicates that the environment cannot be imported into the registry.
