SYMPTOMS

When you start the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Router for Novell GroupWise (GWROUTER) service and the Gateway Services for NetWare (GSNW) is configured to connect to the Novell NetWare server, you may receive the following error messages:
Event ID: 5017
Source: MSExchangeGWRtr
Error occurred when logging on NetWare server.
The system error code is 5
Access is denied.
Event ID: 5017
Source: MSExchangeGWRtr
Error occurred when logging on NetWare server.
The system error code is 1219
The credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials.
Event ID: 5017
Source: MSExchangeGWRtr
Error occurred when logging on NetWare server.
The system error code is 86
The specified network password is not correct.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by incorrect Novell Directory Service (NDS) access to the API Gateway path on the NetWare server. When the GWROUTER service starts, by default, it tries to make a connection directly with the NetWare server instead of using NDS. If you do not specifically configure the NTGATEWAY Group on Novell and configure the Gateway option on GSNW to make an NDS connection to the NetWare server, the GWROUTER service does not authenticate.

RESOLUTION

Properly configure the NTGATEWAY group on the NetWare server and the Gateway option in GSNW, so the GWROUTER service successfully authenticates using NDS.
